Finding Elegant Style as Mom

Finding Elegant Style as Mom - Five Ways on My Version

As I‘ve mentioned, I am quite new to this journey as I’ve discovered this style during my first year of maternity leave. I realized that I had no concept of style during my younger years; I tend to buy everything that I liked and they’re on sale. I had 20+ fast-fashion bags that in the end took over the space in my bedroom.

To be reminded, I was a student and work-novice. I  had spent the half of my salaries to paid my 9000€+ MBA student loan. Once I became a debt-free woman, my source of joys was eating out and traveling while I build stock-portfolio in Indonesia (it was impossible for foreigner to open an account to trade stocks in Germany back in 5 years ago).

Looking back to my childless years, I am quite satisfied that I’ve been to places and experienced things that was quite fun in which I miss sometimes. Maybe the years will come again. I am convinced that life consists in phases…

Anyway long story short, with motherhood I found out another way to spend money 😂 I should say like this. I have no desire to explore the world while having a toddler, I can’t really have free time to go watching concerts, cinemas, dance to the club and not even to fitness studio. Even if I would, there was situations with Covid Pandemic.

Nowadays, one of my happiness source is to look put-together daily and being extra pretty on the weekend on my version; with elegance.

Oh maybe I will just list on my findings. Let’s try…

1. Become Keen on Designer Handbags

It was not a focus of mine until I have the time and financial resources to afford it. Less traveling means lesser money to give out, right 😜 I am started to build collections that according to me, classics. I am fond of low-key luxuries and I dislike over-exposed logos on my bags (or my body after all). For me, big logos look so nouveau riche, too pretentious and so attention-seeker. It would feel like I paid voluntarily thousands of euros just to be a free-walking advertisement from particular brands.

I am not and wouldn’t judge other people who like them but as I’ve said, it’s just not my style. I have no intention to rule out what people should buy. A former friend took things so personal when I said I don’t like LV because most of the monogram but I am here not to mock other’s people style. It’s my opinion and it shouldn’t be relevant to other people as well.

As a proud bargain-hunter, I’ve acquired most entirely of my handbags secondhand through eBay and Vinted. Am I not afraid that they might be fake? I do. They might be, but I have no intention buying fakes through my second hand shopping. At the end of the day, I am only trusting my gut feelings and really cherish the bags while I am using them. They bring the joys to me that 20 fast-fashion bags couldn’t.

Some of them I got through a source. A close friend of mine is working in a luxury, multi-brand boutique in Frankfurt and let say, if I got lucky I could have special prices for luxury items on my wish list.

I buy bags to wear, so I am not collecting and baby them. I love to see them whenever I woke up from the bed and adore what beauties they are. The idea is to have less than 10 bags  with staple colors that suit for every occasion. So far I have five of them and I still have three on my Wishlist. The last three are on the very high price-range, so I need to be patient and save a lot to get them. I still have mid-range brands like Coach, Marc Jacobs, Aigner and Furla in my collection since I don’t like the idea to always wear luxury bags everywhere, especially in professional work environment. I wouldn’t dare to imagine I’d wear 4000€ bag to work, my boss would think I wouldn’t need a raise again in the future lol. Also imagine the envy that could happened in between…

2. Obsessed to High-Quality and Simple Clothing Style

Not sure if I am eligible to call myself as a supporter of luxury-minimalist. I started to spent all the money I’ve earned to demolish my old-wardrobe (cheap, bargained student styles from Primark and H&M) and make them less by upgrade them to much better quality items. I used to have around 10 winter mantels and coats and tons of pullovers. I sorted them out and ended having the only one MaxMara Camel Coat. I wish to have a winter down coat from Moncler and a Burberry Islington Trench Coat then I think I’d have all of Germany’s seasons covered. I recently purchased a Marco Polo Übergangsjacke or transitional jacket I supposed? It’s a crucial item to wear on transition between fall to winter and winter to spring. For this, I sold my jeans and faux leather, biker jacket because I think they are simply not my style anymore. I keep 1-2 old coats to be wore in the playground. Don’t you ever think I’d slide with my MaxMara coat in the playground with my son x).

All these big purchases are meant to be an investment and I really hope that I will wear them as long as at least for 10 years. Imagine you wouldn’t need to stress on shopping anymore and be able to look classy whenever you need.

Winter outfits: I sorted out all of my polyester clothes and my pullover and replaced them with 100% cottons and cashmeres. I have set of turtlenecks and knit pants for house-outfits, so that I feel elegant throughout the day.

Summer outfits: 80% of my dresses are consisting of A-line shirt dresses. I am guilty that I have 20+ of them but I need to differentiate which shirt dress are to be out and about and which one I’d wear for playdates right? 😀 Shirt dress is my awesome found of 2020. It is simple, comfortable and effortlessly elegant. Bonus for breastfeeding moms: it makes the whole process a lot of easier 😉

I found elegant styles also flatter my body type. I don’t feel like showing too much of my body parts after become a mom. I personally don’t think it is also appropriate and thus, I dress more moderately. A simple rule: if you want to show your upper body, close the lower part and vice versa.

Materials play an important role. I am against polyester and I care about materials every time I shop. Most of my clothes are either cotton, viscose, cashmere, wool, or linen. You see and you absolutely feel how comfortable such high quality materials on your body. I don’t do designers on my clothes (keep it on bags and sandals in summer as statement items) but I am no longer shop in Primark and H&M. In short; less items, no trendy items – choose classic, higher quality, higher price, longer durability and more sustainable.

3. Elevating my Overall Looks through… Silk Scarfs!

Elegant women wear silk scarfs, I learned from that YouTube guru lol. My in-law said I look like a granny wearing a silk scarf but guessed what, I don’t care haha. I like them so much, they’re multifunction. They’re not only accessorize your outfit but also can keep you warm if it’s needed. I have four of them.. I think I will write a separate post for this 😊 besides I only have two winter shawls – a pure cashmere and a cashmere-wool blended from local designers. I want a cashmere shawl from MaxMara as well, but does it really necessary to have designer for this? Hmm.. on my Wishlist anyway haha.

Emilio Pucci Scarf

4. Would You Like to Discuss on Elegant Shoes?

Well, there is nothing to be discussed here. I have flat feet where I can’t really wear pretty shoes in my whole life if I want to be pain free. If I have urge to feel extra pretty, I’d wear my YSL’s tribute or Hermes’ Oran (on my wishlist) sandal . Otherwise I am stick to Gabor sandal for summer or Ecco ankle boots for winter time where they have extra room by changeable foot beds feature, so that I can put my orthopedic insoles. I don’t like sneakers as well, since ever. I really wanted to have a colorful nike sneakers and always ended  up to a simple, white sneakers. I was a fan of adidas superstar and now I am trying on new balance.

They said a woman should have a pair of Jimmy Choo once in her life, well I will just definitely skip them. No orthopedic insoles, no fun!

From left to right; Gabor Sandal (you can see that I can change the insole), Tribute Sandal, then my New Balance white to-go sneaker

5. How About Makeups? And Hair?

I don’t always wear makeups but I wear tinted lip balm no matter what if I go outside, mostly to the playground. I have a video on my daily make up already, so you can watch it. For being extra pretty on the weekend, I put primer, light foundation and play with eyeshadows a bit.

Unfortunately I born with a thick, frizzy hair. I used to smoothed them permanently back in Indonesia. Maybe similar to keratin treatment? But nowadays I only blow dry them after wash, maybe once or twice a week depending if I have schedules on my calendar.

Make ups are not sooo important if you have a great complexion. And in order to have it, you need to look after your skin care routine first. Should I write them on blog as well? Tell me.

Alright. That’s all my newest essay. I really enjoy writing them and I don’t actually really care on how long it does x)

How about to read on what is a no go for being an elegant mom in my version? And don’t take it too seriously lol.

If you think you might have similar ideas to me and you’re obviously moms, we can hang more often on Instagram. Ask questions or simply say hi to me! I’d be glad to answer your messages x.
